LOGIES LOAD UP ON ‘THE TWELVE’, ‘COLIN FROM ACCOUNTS’

Australia’s annual celebration of TV this weekend named Sam Neill as the country’s most popular actor for his role in courtroom drama series “The Twelve.” The Foxtel and Binge show was the numerical winner on the evening in a tie with Binge’s “Colin From Accounts.” Both shows picked up a trio of awards.
Sonia Kruger was named Australia’s most popular TV personality for her roles on “The Voice,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Masked Singer.”

BOX OFFICE

In the face of the second weekend of the “Barbenheimer” juggernaut, Michael and Danny Philippou’s feature directorial debut horror film “Talk to Me” collected a stellar £643,354 ($827,403) at the U.K. and Ireland box office in its opening weekend, setting a new office box office record for Altitude. The film, which has played at the Sundance, Berlin and SXSW film festivals, was picked up by Altitude in Cannes last year.

Produced by Causeway Films, the film follows a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, and become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.

NEW YORK ASIAN AWARDS

The New York Asian Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a sprinkling of prizes and a screening of the upcoming Chinese animation film “The Monkey King.” The Uncaged Award went to Ong Lay Jin’s “Abang Adik,” a feature film about two orphaned brothers in Malaysia, one who has resigned himself to a life of poverty, while the other burns with rage. A special mention for technical achievement went to “Flaming Gold,” while a special mention for directing went to “Greenhouse.”

The winning short animation film was “What We Leave Behind,” while a special mention went to “Hidari.” The best live-action short was “Will You Look at Me,” and a special mention to “Kumbangs.” Korea’s Lee Hanae picked up the ‘Best From the East’ Awards.

NEW ZEALAND AWARDS

Three juried awards for short films were presented on Saturday at the ASB Waterfront Theatre in Auckland as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. The NZIFF Patrons Award for best short film went to “Hey Brainy Man,” directed by Jo Randerson and Loren Taylor. The Creative New Zealand Emerging Talent Award went to “Anu,” directed by Pulkit Arora. The Auckland Live Spirit of The Civic Award went to “Freedom Fighter,” directed by dir. Tusi Tamasese. Special mentions went to “Freedom Fighter” actor Luz-Eliana Folau-Brown and to Adam Luxton who was cinematographer on both “Hey Brainy Man” and “Anu.”

STREAMING

Korean fantasy epic series, “Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun” is confirmed to return for a second season on Disney+ with story set eight years after King Tagon first ascended to the throne. The show will upload to the streamer at an unspecified date in September.

Starring Jang Donggun (“A Gentleman’s Destiny,” “V.I.P.”) as Tagon, the king of Arthdal; Lee Joongi (“Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo,” “The King and the Clown”) as Eunseom, the leader of the Ago tribe and Inaishingi; Shin Saekyeong (“Run On,” “The Girl Who Sees Scents”) as Tanya, the high priestess of Arthdal; and Kim Okvin (“Thirst,” “The Villainess”) as the manipulative politician and first queen of Arthdal, Taealha, “Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun” season two is directed by Kim Kwangsik (“The Great Battle”), and is written by season one writers Kim Younghyun and Park Sangyean.

Elsewhere, IN10 Media Network‘s Indian streaming service Epic On has unveiled an originals slate. They include “Tatlubaaz,” produced by 9pm Films, set in Varanasi following a notorious con man, starring Dheeraj Dhoopar, Nargis Fakhri and Divya Agarwal; “Video Cam Scam,” produced by Blue Drop Films, that features a chase between two worlds – scammers and a cop, starring Rajniesh Duggall and Amruta Khanvilkar; “Plot 1/2,” produced by Rusk Media, a comedy about five young and quirky cousins living in old Delhi, featuring Nishant Malkhani and Ankit Bhatia; “#Blue Tick (aur trolls),” produced by Folklore Film Studios, about the rise and fall of an influencer starring Parul Gulati and Siddharth Nigam; “Maya Deluxe,” produced by Lockdown Shorts Studio, that follows a Mumbai middle-class couple whose their lives are shattered by a murder; and “Chill,” produced by Mukesh Chhabra Films, a drama of corporate reinvention.

International Literary Properties, whose portfolio includes literary heavyweights including Margery Allingham, Eric Ambler, James M. Cain, Ngaio Marsh, Christopher Paul Curtis, Georges Simenon, Dennis Wheatley and Evelyn Waugh, has added two directors to its board.

Milena Alberti-Perez was a long-time executive at Penguin Random House, where she rose to become global and U.S. CFO from 2015 to 2017 and currently serves on the board of directors of NPR, Pitney Bowes, Digimarc, Overdrive, Jumpstart and the Wild Bird Fund. She was most recently the CFO of Getty Images.

Sandy Climan is the founder and CEO of LA-based strategic advisory and media investment company Entertainment Media Ventures. Climan previously served as corporate executive VP and president of worldwide business development at Universal Studios, served on the senior management team at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), where he represented Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Kevin Costner, Danny DeVito and Michael Mann.

Climan was the executive producer of “U2 3D” and producer of “The Aviator,” for which he won a BAFTA. He serves on the American Cinematheque and the UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television boards.

The BFI has unveiled the U.K. Global Screen Fund Data Hub, a resource that provides the independent screen sector with international audience data, including VOD consumption patterns, with the aim of assisting U.K. content creators, distributors, sales agents and financiers to make better-informed decisions, devise data-driven strategies and enhance the global opportunities for U.K. content.

The online platform will provide monthly reports relating to international demand, powered by Parrot Analytics and presenting the global top 20 in-demand film, series and talent for the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain. It will also provide monthly reports relating to international viewership, powered by Digital-i and presenting the top 20 most viewed films and series by service (Netflix and Amazon Prime Video), for U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

MUSIC ROYALTIES

ANote Music, the European marketplace for investing in music royalties, has revealed additional funding and the sponsoring of Music Royalties Enhanced Strategy Certificates, expanding its offer to professional investors. ACQUISITIONS

John Fallon’s thriller “Malicious” has been acquired by 4 Digital Media and will be released in North America, Ireland and the U.K. on Oct. 10. The film follows Governor William McCabe (Nick Baillie), his wife Lauren (Melissa Anschutz) and distant step daughter Erin (Alix Lane) who strain to enjoy their time together. Things take a turn for the worse when a charismatic stranger (Kevin Interdonato) knocks on their door and triggers an unexpected chain of events.

“Aliens Uncovered : Borrowed Time”, the latest in a series of sci-fi documentaries by filmmaker Clive Christopher, has been acquired for North American release by Breaking Glass Pictures and will bow in September. The film sees the world faces a new threat as the Pentagon verifies the existence of an alien mothership potentially sending probes to Earth.

Breaking Glass has also taken worldwide rights on and set a September bow for horror film “Insidious Inferno,” written and directed by Calvin McCarthy, where a secluded cottage becomes the stage for a sequence of gruesome murders.
