The Undergraduate: Cliff & Zach scene
INT. MINIVAN
CLIFF
So, I came up with a great idea... We need to come up with some phrases. Words. You know?
ZACH
Uh...no.
CLIFF
Ok, who decided that "faded" means drunk? Or that "phat" means cool? Or "bounce" means leave?
ZACH
I don’t know. Some rapper?
CLIFF
No, not some rapper. Somebody, some senior somewhere, just like us, just made them up. Point is, you think the guy that came up with "faded" is wondering if he’s going to have a great senior year? Shit no. He’s having a great senior year. He’s the guy that came up with "faded".
Zach eyes his buddy.
CLIFF (CONT’D)
I’m serious. We need to either come up with some new words, like phat with a "ph", or take old words, like faded, and give them different meanings. Cool shit that’ll sweep the school. And then we’ll be the guys that invented them.
ZACH
Ok, like what?
CLIFF
I don’t know, like, uh...stumped.
ZACH
What’s it mean?
CLIFF
Well, we have to give it a meaning, numbnuts. Like, I dunno... drunk. Yeah, stumped means drunk. "Man, I was so stumped last night." There.
ZACH
What’s wrong with "faded"? It works.
CLIFF
That’s not the point. It...just...never mind.
ZACH
I’m not trying to piss on your parade it’s just-- Ok, how ’bout this--since it’s kind of confusing and you don’t really know the answer, maybe stumped could mean, "I don’t know". Like, "Shit, this whole thing with inventing new words really has me stumped."
CLIFF
God damn it, that’s what stumped already means.
ZACH
Hmm. Good point.
