The Shield: Vic scene

EXT. SHANE’S DRIVEWAY - DAY

Vic approaches Mara as she gets out of her new Lexus.

MARA

Shane’s not home.

VIC

I know. I wanted to apologize to you for barging in last night.

MARA

(cool)

No big deal.

Sensing the chill--

VIC

Maybe we’re getting off on the wrong foot here.

Mara does nothing to disabuse him of this. He presses on.

VIC

You and I really should get to know each other.

MARA

Why’s that?

VIC

You’re becoming an important part of Shane’s life. Which makes you a member of the family.

MARA

Never was big on family. Or cops really. Shane’s the exception.

Another tack. The Vic Mackey charm--

VIC

Look, I’m just trying to find a way for us to get along here.

MARA

And I’ve seen that same smile from about half a dozen guys who gave me fake numbers the next morning.

VIC

Did I do something to piss you off?

Not the question he was asking but she answers it anyway.

MARA

I don’t like the way you treat Shane. But that’s his problem.

VIC

Don’t dig too deep into what makes Shane and me tick.

MARA

Shane works for you. But he lives for me.

VIC

You’ve known him three months.

MARA

I know enough. And I’m not sure what your problem is. I’m guessing it’s cause you couldn’t hold onto your own family and Shane is all you really got left.

VIC

Excuse me?

MARA

Whatever the reason, I’ve got enough bullshit seeping into my life without inviting yours in. Next time, don’t roll up to me if Shane’s not here.

And with that, she presses the car remote. There’s a CHIRP, she turns, and heads inside.
